ICBC – Discontinuing License Plate Decals (May 1, 2022)
May 1, 2022
Starting May 1, 2022, license plate validation decals will no longer be required on B.C. vehicles.
For years, strata corporations have relied on the decals to determine if a vehicle is insured. Many strata corporations have bylaws that require vehicles be insured or have a storage policy in place.
Moving forward, we recommend that on a case-by-case basis, strata corporations only request proof of insurance if there is a reason to believe a vehicle is not insured. An example would be: if the plates are removed, and a vehicle has not moved from their stall for an extended period.
Per the Motor Vehicle Act and Insurance (Vehicle) Act, it is the law for motor vehicles in operation to have valid insurance.
We do not recommend strata councils request proof of insurance from every resident parking their car on the property. In addition, we do not recommend strata councils request proof of insurance to be placed on the dashboard. There are privacy concerns with doing this if not redacted appropriately.
